We could learn a lot from a dog...

Her name is "Momma".

Actually, that's her new name.
You ask, "But what's her real name...the name she was given by the people who had her? The name she's heard all of her life? The name that makes her tail wag when she hears her master call her name?"
We don't have a clue.
She was dumped at a shelter when her litter from an unknown daddy was just a day or two old. Her coat was in poor condition and she has scars on her face from God-only-knows-what.
Unfortunately, at that shelter, they are unable to take up cage space and care for a momma and her babies for another 7+ weeks, until they are old enough to go to a home. So she and her 6 babies were set to be euthanized.
We got a last-minute call, asking if we were interested.

We committed to her and her babies and made the 45 minute trip to get her and her litter. She was SO afraid of us, that when we got her and her babies home (to The Perky Puppy kitchen), she just cowered in the corner of her huge crate. We had to lift her out of her cage to take her outside and then carry her back into her babies. She wouldn't even walk, because she cowered every time we were around.
Then, to make matters worse, we started losing babies.
5 died in less than 24 hours. They would stop eating, she would nudge them away, and we would jump in and do everything humanly possible to save them. (I think we now own every baby/baby animal bottle & nipple known to man.) We even tried tube-feeding and incubating the babies. No luck. It was AWFUL! We cried A LOT!!! (FYI-There are many reasons that neonatal puppies fail and die. The most likely culprit here is stress...dumped, sheltered, set to die, shuffled again...strangers, car rides, shuffled from one place to another...it was just too much.)
Now-let me say, that if all that happened to me, I'd be an emotional wreck for a VERY LONG TIME.
I'd probably still be feeling sorry for myself.
But not this girl!!! She is amazingly and beautifully resilient!! Just look at her...
Seriously...go back up to the pictures and look at her. (I'll wait.)
OK...welcome back.
Fast forward-7+weeks.
Let me tell you about "Momma" (She came to the name naturally. If you had a no-name dog nursing in your kitchen, I'm guessing you'd call her something similar.)-
She's all done being a momma. Her only surviving baby ("Chipmunk") is now weaned and ready to go to a home. (You can see him HERE.) So, momma's "off the hook" and she concentrate fully on just being a dog. AND, BOY, DOES SHE LOVE BEING A DOG!!!
She plays and runs and skips and jumps! She wags and cuddles and is just happy, happy, happy!
She loves her food, loves her toys, and loves attention. She loves jumping up on my bed and stretching out for a nice nap. And she LOVES her new name!!
She will be scheduled for spay/rabies shot at Dr. Steed's office this week. (If you would like to donate towards that, please email me at jessica@theperkypuppy.com ) She is hanging out with us until we find her the perfect home.
HERE'S WHAT I LOVE- Dogs don't hold grudges, and they don't feel sorry for themselves.
Dogs take every day and treat it like a gift. Most of them are appreciative and loving, no matter what they've survived or what they've struggled through.
Wow! Don't we all know people who could stand to set down their baggage and just be HAPPY???
I wanna be like Momma when I grow up.
How about you?

Tootsie

ADOPTED! Tootsie the rescued dachshund has a new home! She still has to stay here for another week to finish up her quarantine period. She is going to a very nice family who has a 5-month old spayed, chocolate, longhaired dachshund (named "Rose") that they bought from TPP a few months ago!

So Tootsie is not only getting a family, she's getting a sister too!!

YAY!!!

Nothing Cooler

I've just got to say that there is nothing cooler in the world than the view out the window from my office! My office is in the rear corner of The Perky Puppy building, and my window looks right into the play yard at Play N Stay Pet Camp.

Throughout the day, I get to watch some of our FANTASTIC staff playing with the "doggie guests" that are staying with us! They throw the ball, they rub bellies, they play in the little wading pool or with the hose...they play, play, play!!! And I can't tell who is happier-the dogs or the staff!!

(I know that I will probably be flooded with job requests. I'm sorry, but we aren't hiring right now. All shifts are covered with great people! However, if you are an experienced dog groomer, give me a call.)

What a great view!!! What a great opportunity for the people and the dogs!!! What a great opportunity for me!!! I'm thrilled to be a part of it!! THANK YOU!

Rescue Price Revision

Hey...for any of you who are looking at our rescues, I've just revised the pricing structure.

There is now a flat adoption fee for most rescues (instead of a "pay this higher amount & get this much in a credit when you show proof of neuter" structure).

Spay/Neuter is still required within two months (or pay a stiff $250. fine).

I'm hoping that potential rescue homes will be encouraged by the decrease in "up front" costs.

Chipmunk's picture is now posted, if you don't know who he is, you'd better click here to see him!

Conversations

Had some convo today with a really nice guy from a rescue organization. Funny how we're so alike and so different all at the same time...

BIG SIMILARITY-we both love dogs and we're both good people.

BIG DIFFERENCE-their organization wants no affiliations with a business that encourages the breeding of dogs and the sale of puppies.

You know, if I were in his shoes, I might very well feel the same way.

Wish they could put themselves in my shoes.

Not sure where this will go, if anywhere. Maybe someday we can all work together to offer the best possible opportunities for all puppies.

We'll see.

I'm willing to stretch my thinking.

In the meantime, check out our current selection of rescues.

Rescue Update 08.23.08

We just got a new rescue in today...
a little female red dachshund puppy...4 mos. old! Her name is "Tootsie"!

Tootsie's owner was unable to keep her due to some family problems. We don't know much about her original breeder, but we know that she is BEAUTIFUL!!

She's behind on her shots, so she'll get the works over the next several days...deworming starts today...shots start tomorrow...she will then be scheduled for spay and when she's ready she'll move next door to keep up on her housebreaking. We'll keep you posted...

In other news:
  • Jimmy the Beagle is now next door working on his housebreaking. He's the sweetest thing! I hope he finds a home soon!
  • Frankie, the Sharpei/Lab (?) mix puppy, AND one of the beagle/lab puppies are both still here. They are all black...so they're harder to adopt out. It's what is referred to as "Black Dog Syndrome" and is very common in the dog world. Weird, huh? So if you (or someone you know) would love to adopt an ALL BLACK puppy...please have them call us!
  • "Momma" (Beagle/Basset) is still nursing "Chipmunk", her only baby. He is now 6 weeks old, just got his first shot, and is eating a lot on his own. He's at that stage where he wants to eat all of the food he is offered AND eat from Momma too. She'll have to tolerate that for another 2 weeks, until he is fully away from her and ready for adoption. Then she will be spayed and up for adoption as well!
  • CONGRATULATIONS- Napoleon, the Papillon, has gotten a great home with Penny and Jamie, two of our Play N Stay staffers (and friends)! He shares his new home with his 2 doggie siblings: Nellie (a beagle) and KoKo (our very first rescue)!

And there ya have it!

Welcome!
